What is Metric Grade 12.9?

ISO 898-1 Property Class 12.9 is the highest standard alloy steel bolt specification, achieving 1220 MPa tensile and 1100 MPa yield. Always quenched and tempered from alloy steel (Cr-Mo, Cr-Ni-Mo). Used in the most demanding mechanical applications: engine cylinder head bolts, connecting rods, motorsport and precision machinery where minimum thread engagement and maximum preload in the smallest package is required. Class 12.9 socket head cap screws and hex bolts are standard in hydraulic systems, precision machinery and automotive high-performance engines. Hydrogen embrittlement is a significant risk — galvanising is prohibited. Geomet coating or black oxide is used.

Metric Grade 12.9 Fastener Chemical Composition

Metric Grade 12.9 fasteners are manufactured from medium carbon alloy steel, typically containing chromium, molybdenum, and manganese as primary alloying elements. Chromium enhances hardenability and wear resistance, while molybdenum improves strength retention at elevated temperatures and reduces temper embrittlement. Manganese contributes to deep hardenability during quenching, ensuring uniform mechanical properties throughout the fastener cross-section. Trace additions of boron in some variants further increase hardenability without compromising ductility, allowing the material to achieve the demanding strength requirements specified under ISO 898-1.

These alloying characteristics enable Grade 12.9 fasteners to deliver exceptional tensile and yield strength, making them ideal for high-load structural, automotive, and machinery applications. The quenched and tempered microstructure provides excellent fatigue resistance and dimensional stability under cyclic loading. Although corrosion resistance is limited compared to stainless alternatives, protective coatings such as zinc-flake or phosphate finishes are commonly applied. Combined with reliable heat resistance up to 300°C, this makes Grade 12.9 the preferred choice for demanding high-strength fastening applications.

Applications

Metric Grade 12.9 Fastener Applications

Metric Grade 12.9 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Metric Grade 12.9 fasteners include highest standard metric grade; critical bolted joints.
Used where a smaller metric fastener must deliver very high preload, such as machine frames, tooling plates, bearing housings and high duty bolted assemblies. Joint design should control torque, lubrication and proof load margin.
Metric Grade 12.9 cap screws and bolts are common in suspension brackets, drivetrain fixtures, engine accessories and racing hardware where high tensile strength and fatigue-resistant clamping are required.
Suitable for dies, molds, presses, robotic fixtures and heavy equipment attachments that require high strength socket head cap screws or hex bolts with consistent mechanical properties.
Because 12.9 alloy steel is not inherently corrosion resistant, specify appropriate coatings or corrosion inhibitors and avoid acidic cleaning or uncontrolled electroplating that can increase hydrogen embrittlement risk.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metric Grade 12.9 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Metric Grade 12.9 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (Alloy Q&T High), applicable standards (ISO 898-1), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Metric Grade 12.9 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
At 1220 MPa, Class 12.9 is far above the safe galvanising threshold (~1000 MPa). Hydrogen from acid pickling and galvanising bath absorbs into the steel and causes delayed brittle fracture (hydrogen embrittlement) within hours to days of assembly. Prohibited by ISO 898-1 and ISO 10684. Specify black oxide, Geomet, Dacromet or zinc-flake coating.
EN ISO 4762 socket head cap screws (SHCS) are the most common 12.9 form, in M2–M36. DIN 912 is the legacy German standard — now replaced by EN ISO 4762. Button head (ISO 7380) and countersunk (ISO 10642) also available in Class 12.9. Black oxide (mill finish) or Geomet coating standard.
ISO 898-2 Class 12 heavy hex nuts or EN ISO 7042 self-locking nuts. The nut proof load must exceed the bolt proof load — 12.9 bolts require very high-strength nuts. In many 12.9 applications (through-bolt or stud), the nut/thread engagement is designed for the full 12.9 proof load.
Class 12.9: 1220 MPa tensile / 1100 MPa yield (ISO metric). SAE Grade 8: 1033 MPa tensile / 921 MPa yield (SAE inch). Class 12.9 is significantly stronger. SAE Grade 8 corresponds more closely to ISO 10.9. For maximum-strength metric applications, Class 12.9 is specified; for inch-format, look at ASTM F3125 Grade A490 or custom specifications.
