Product Overview

What are Hastelloy C22 Washers?

Hastelloy C22 washers are nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy fastener components manufactured from UNS N06022 bar or plate stock conforming to ASTM B574. The alloy’s exceptional corrosion resistance stems from its precisely balanced chemistry – 20-22.5% chromium, 12.5-14.5% molybdenum, and 2.5-3.5% tungsten – delivering outstanding resistance to both oxidising and reducing media simultaneously.

With a PREN exceeding 65, Hastelloy C22 washers outperform C276 and all standard stainless steel grades in mixed-acid, chloride-bearing, and oxidising environments. They are specified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service bolted assemblies, chemical reactor closures, and pharmaceutical process equipment where contamination-free sealing is mandatory.

Material Chemistry

Hastelloy C22 Chemical Composition

Hastelloy C22 Washers derive their exceptional acid corrosion resistance from a precisely controlled nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition per ASTM. High molybdenum and tungsten content suppresses pitting and reducing-acid attack; ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) eliminates sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Full elemental composition is certified in the EN 10204 MTC supplied with every Hastelloy C22 washers order from RealBolt.

Why Hastelloy C22 Alloy Composition Matters for Washers

Mo (12.5–14.5%) + W (2.5–3.5%) — Dual Resistance to Oxidising and Reducing Media
The combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives Hastelloy C22 washers a PREN exceeding 65, providing resistance to both oxidising acids (nitric, chromic) and reducing acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric) simultaneously — a capability no single-element alloy can match. This is critical under washer bearing surfaces where crevice conditions concentrate aggressive species.
Ultra-Low Carbon (0.010% max) — Sensitisation-Free Performance
The extremely low carbon ceiling prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Hastelloy C22 washers used in welded assemblies retain full intergranular corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment, making them ideal for reactor closure flanges and heat exchanger tube sheets.
Cr (20–22.5%) — Superior Oxidising Acid Resistance vs C276
The higher chromium content compared to Hastelloy C276 (15–17% Cr) gives C22 washers measurably better resistance to wet chlorine, hypochlorite solutions, and nitric acid environments — the key reason C22 is preferred in FGD scrubber and bleach plant bolted connections where C276 shows accelerated attack.

Industry Applications

Hastelloy C22 Washers Applications — Industries & End Uses

Hastelloy C22 Washers from RealBolt are specified across chemical processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and FGD where excellent corrosion resistance and 800 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples. Select an industry below to see specific Hastelloy C22 washers application details and RealBolt stock availability.
Hastelloy C22 washers are the preferred choice for bolted flange connections on chemical reactors, distillation columns, and process piping handling mixed acids, chlorinated solvents, and halide-bearing streams. Their dual resistance to oxidising and reducing media eliminates the need for two separate alloy grades across a single process train.
FGD absorber towers, mist eliminator supports, and spray header flanges operate in saturated HCl and H2SO4 environments that rapidly corrode C276 and all stainless grades. Hastelloy C22 washers are specified for all bolted connections in the absorber wet zone, providing measurably longer service life and reduced maintenance shutdowns.
Hastelloy C22 washers are used in pharmaceutical reactor vessel closures, agitator shaft flanges, and CIP/SIP piping connections where FDA-compliant materials, freedom from contamination, and resistance to aggressive cleaning agents (peracetic acid, sodium hypochlorite) are simultaneously required.
NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliant Hastelloy C22 washers are specified for subsea wellhead flange assemblies, topside process piping in H2S-bearing service, and chemical injection line connections where standard nickel alloy washers show accelerated crevice attack under the washer bearing face.

Hastelloy C22 Washers — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Hastelloy C22 Washers from RealBolt — covering acid corrosion resistance, NACE MR0175 compliance, ASTM standards, available sizes, and MTC documentation. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Hastelloy C22 washers selection and pricing.
Hastelloy C22 flat washers are manufactured to DIN 125 (normal series), DIN 9021 (large OD series), ISO 7089, and ISO 7093 for metric sizes. Inch series washers are produced per ASME B18.22.1 in narrow, regular, and wide patterns. Spring washers and lock washers are available to DIN 127 and DIN 6798. Custom profiles – including ASME B16.5 flange face washers and oversized bearing washers – are machined to drawing with 10-15 working day lead time.
Yes – in oxidising acid environments, Hastelloy C22 washers consistently outperform C276. The higher chromium content (20-22.5% vs 15-17% in C276) gives C22 superior resistance to nitric acid, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, and ferric chloride solutions. In reducing environments such as pure hydrochloric acid, performance is broadly comparable. For mixed-acid or alternating oxidising/reducing service – common in FGD scrubbers and bleach plants – C22 is the preferred specification. Consult our engineering team if your process alternates between oxidising and reducing conditions.
Yes – Hastelloy C22 washers supplied in the annealed condition with hardness not exceeding 35 HRC are fully compliant with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for use in H2S-bearing oil and gas environments. Each batch is supplied with a hardness survey report. For critical sour service applications, we can supply individual hardness test results per washer on request. Material is certified to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, with 3.2 TPI-witnessed certification available.
In oxidising atmospheres, Hastelloy C22 washers maintain structural integrity and oxidation resistance up to approximately 1038°C. In reducing or sulphur-bearing high-temperature environments, the practical limit is closer to 760°C due to potential sulphidation attack. For cyclic thermal service – such as heat exchanger bolted closures subject to repeated thermal cycling – the low thermal expansion coefficient (12.7 µm/m·°C) minimises differential expansion issues when paired with C22 bolts and nuts of the same alloy.
