Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Washers?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti washers are austenitic stainless steel fastener components manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 flat-rolled or bar stock conforming to ASTM A240, ASTM A276, and ASTM A182. The molybdenum addition (2.0-3.0%) elevates pitting resistance well beyond standard 304 stainless, while the low-carbon 316L variant and titanium-stabilised 316Ti grade address sensitisation concerns in welded assemblies and elevated-temperature service respectively.

These washers are specified across chemical processing, marine, pharmaceutical, and food-grade industries where chloride exposure, crevice corrosion under bearing surfaces, and hygienic cleanliness requirements demand more than carbon steel or standard stainless can deliver. Available in flat, spring, and structural forms to DIN 125, DIN 127, DIN 9021, and ASME B18.21.1, SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti washers provide reliable load distribution and corrosion protection in bolted joint assemblies worldwide.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Washers are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Washers

Mo (2.0–3.0%) — Crevice Corrosion Resistance Under Bearing Surfaces
Molybdenum raises the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 316 to approximately 24–26, providing meaningful resistance to chloride-induced crevice corrosion in the confined gap between washer and substrate — the most vulnerable zone in a bolted joint exposed to marine or chemical environments.
Low Carbon in 316L — Sensitisation-Free Welded Assemblies
The 316L variant limits carbon to 0.03% max, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. 316L washers used in welded pipe flanges and pressure vessel nozzle connections retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without post-weld annealing.
Titanium Stabilisation in 316Ti — High-Temperature Stability
316Ti adds titanium at a minimum of 5× the carbon content, which preferentially combines with carbon and prevents sensitisation at service temperatures up to 800°C. This makes 316Ti washers the preferred choice for exhaust flanges, heat exchanger covers, and furnace hardware where intermittent high-temperature exposure is unavoidable.

?? Anti-galling note: Apply PTFE-based or molybdenum disulphide paste to washer bearing faces in stainless-to-stainless contact to prevent galling under high clamp loads. Never use copper-based compounds on food-grade or pharmaceutical installations.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Washers Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Washers from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 / 316L flat washers are standard in bolted flange assemblies on chemical reactors, heat exchangers, and process pipework handling dilute sulphuric acid, acetic acid, and chloride-bearing process streams. The molybdenum content provides the additional pitting resistance that 304 stainless cannot deliver in these environments. 316L is preferred for welded nozzle connections to avoid sensitisation.
316 and 316L washers are widely used in offshore platform structural connections, marine deck fittings, railing systems, and hull penetration hardware where continuous salt spray and splash-zone exposure demand reliable corrosion resistance. Large OD DIN 9021 washers distribute load effectively on GRP and aluminium deck panels without galvanic incompatibility issues.
316L washers with electropolished finish are specified in pharmaceutical process equipment, food-grade conveyors, dairy processing lines, and clean-room structural connections. The low-carbon grade prevents sensitisation during CIP (clean-in-place) steam sterilisation cycles, and the smooth electropolished surface eliminates crevices that could harbour bacteria or product residue.
SS 316 washers are used throughout reverse osmosis membrane housings, pressure vessel end-cap connections, and pump flange assemblies in desalination and water treatment plants. The combination of molybdenum content and passive oxide film provides long-term resistance to chlorinated water and brine concentrations encountered in RO reject streams.

All three grades share the same base composition of 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum. The key differences are: SS 316 is the standard grade suitable for most industrial applications. SS 316L limits carbon to 0.03% max, preventing sensitisation (chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries) in welded assemblies and during steam sterilisation – making it the preferred choice for pharmaceutical, food-grade, and welded pipe flange applications. SS 316Ti adds titanium at 5× the carbon content minimum, which stabilises the alloy against sensitisation at continuous service temperatures up to 800°C – preferred for exhaust flanges, furnace hardware, and high-temperature process equipment where 316L’s lower carbon alone is insufficient.
DIN 125 (ISO 7089) is the standard flat washer for general bolted connections – normal OD, suitable for steel and stainless structural joints. DIN 9021 provides a significantly larger outer diameter (approximately 3× the bolt diameter) and is used where the substrate is soft, has low bearing strength, or where load must be distributed over a wider area – common in GRP, timber, aluminium, and insulation panel fixings. ASME B18.21.1 covers both flat and lock washers to inch dimensions and is specified for ASME-coded pressure vessel and piping connections in the US and export markets. If your project uses metric bolting to DIN 931/933 or ISO 4014/4017, specify DIN 125 or DIN 9021. For ASME B16.5 flange bolt sets, specify ASME B18.21.1.
Stainless steel is inherently susceptible to galling (cold welding under high contact pressure and rotation) when stainless-to-stainless contact occurs. To prevent galling between 316 washers and 316 nuts or bolt heads, always apply a PTFE-based anti-seize compound or molybdenum disulphide paste to the washer bearing faces before assembly. Tighten to the specified torque in a single smooth motion rather than in multiple incremental passes where possible. For critical flange assemblies, consider using 316L washers with a slightly different hardness to the bolt and nut to reduce the risk of adhesive wear. Never use copper-based anti-seize on food-grade or pharmaceutical installations.
Standard supply is mill finish (2B or No. 1 hot-rolled surface) as punched or machined. Additional finishes available include: Passivated (per ASTM A967 or AMS 2700) – removes free iron from the surface and enhances the passive oxide film for improved corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. Electropolished – removes 20-30 µm from the surface, eliminating micro-crevices and producing a bright, hygienic finish specified for pharmaceutical, food-grade, and semiconductor applications. Satin / Brushed (No. 4 finish) – for architectural and decorative applications. All finishes are available with EN 10204 3.1 certification confirming compliance with the specified surface treatment standard.
