Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Studs?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti studs are austenitic stainless steel threaded fasteners manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 bar stock conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) to the standard 18-8 chromium-nickel base delivers significantly improved resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared to SS 304, while the low-carbon 316L variant eliminates sensitisation risk in welded assemblies.

SS 316Ti introduces titanium stabilisation (5×C minimum) to prevent intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone, making it the preferred choice for high-temperature process piping and chemical plant flanges. All three grades are specified under ASTM A193 B8M for pressure vessel and heat exchanger stud bolt applications, and are widely used across pharmaceutical, marine, food processing, and petrochemical industries worldwide.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Studs are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Mo (2–3%) — Chloride Pitting Resistance
Molybdenum raises the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of SS 316 to approximately 24–26, providing meaningful resistance to chloride-induced pitting in coastal, marine, and mild chemical environments where SS 304 studs would fail prematurely.
316L (C = 0.03%) — Weld Sensitisation Prevention
The ultra-low carbon content of 316L prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or elevated-temperature service. Stud bolt assemblies welded into pressure vessel nozzles retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without post-weld annealing.
316Ti (Ti = 5×C) — High-Temperature Stabilisation
Titanium in 316Ti preferentially combines with carbon, permanently preventing sensitisation at service temperatures up to 900°C. This makes 316Ti studs the correct choice for heat exchanger shell flanges, furnace door hardware, and process piping operating in the 400–900°C sensitisation range.

?? Galling Warning: SS 316 studs are prone to galling under high torque. Always use molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) or PTFE-based anti-seize on threads and nut bearing faces. Lubricated values assume K=0.17. Never assemble dry at high torque without anti-galling compound.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Studs from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 and 316L stud bolt sets are the standard specification for ASME B16.5 flanged connections in chemical reactors, distillation columns, and process piping handling dilute acids, chloride-bearing process streams, and organic solvents. ASTM A193 B8M / A194 2HM nut sets are supplied as matched heat assemblies with EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
SS 316 studs are specified for marine deck fittings, seawater pump flanges, desalination plant piping, and coastal structural connections where atmospheric chloride exposure demands superior corrosion resistance over SS 304. The molybdenum content provides meaningful protection in splash-zone and tidal environments.
SS 316L studs are the preferred grade for hygienic process equipment flanges, bioreactor nozzle connections, and CIP/SIP piping assemblies. The low carbon content eliminates sensitisation risk during steam sterilisation cycles, and the smooth electropolished thread finish meets FDA and GMP surface finish requirements.
SS 316Ti stud bolts are specified for TEMA Class B and C heat exchanger channel cover flanges and pressure vessel nozzle connections operating in the 400-900°C sensitisation range. Titanium stabilisation prevents intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone without requiring post-weld heat treatment.

SS 316 (UNS S31600) is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade suitable for most chemical and marine applications up to 425°C continuous service. SS 316L (UNS S31603) has a carbon content limited to 0.03% maximum, which prevents chromium carbide sensitisation during welding – making it the correct choice for stud bolt assemblies welded into pressure vessel nozzles or heat exchanger shells without post-weld annealing. SS 316Ti (UNS S31635) adds titanium stabilisation (minimum 5×C) for applications requiring continuous service in the 400-900°C sensitisation temperature range, such as furnace flanges and high-temperature process piping. For ambient-temperature flanged connections, 316L is the most commonly specified grade due to its weld compatibility and equivalent corrosion resistance to standard 316.
Austenitic stainless steel grades including SS 316 are highly susceptible to galling (cold welding of threads) during assembly, particularly under high torque or rapid tightening. Always apply a molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) paste, PTFE-based anti-seize, or Jet-Lube SS-30 stainless-specific compound to all threads and nut bearing faces before assembly. Reduce target torque values by approximately 20% compared to dry assembly values. Tighten in a star pattern using a calibrated torque wrench. Never use impact wrenches on stainless stud bolt assemblies – the rapid rotation generates frictional heat that initiates galling before full clamp load is achieved.
SS 316 and 316L studs provide good resistance to atmospheric marine exposure and splash-zone conditions, but are not recommended for continuous full seawater immersion in bolted flange connections. The PREN of approximately 24-26 is insufficient to prevent crevice corrosion under nut bearing faces and washers in stagnant seawater at temperatures above 20°C. For fully immersed subsea or offshore structural connections, duplex SS 2205 (PREN 35+), super duplex SS 2507 (PREN 42+), or Inconel 625 (PREN 51+) studs are the correct specification. SS 316 studs are suitable for above-waterline marine hardware, coastal process piping, and desalination plant connections where full immersion does not occur.
Standard supply includes EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate covering chemical composition and mechanical properties, traceable to the original melt heat number. EN 10204 3.2 TPI-witnessed certificates are available on request for nuclear, defence, and critical pressure vessel applications. Additional testing available includes PMI (positive material identification) by XRF, intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 Practice E (for 316L weld sensitisation verification), hardness survey per NACE MR0175, and dimensional inspection report per DIN 976-1 or ASME B18.31.2. All testing is conducted by NABL-accredited third-party laboratories.
