Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Threaded Rods?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti threaded rods are austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 bar stock conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. The addition of molybdenum (2.0-3.0%) to the chromium-nickel base provides significantly enhanced resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared to standard 304-series stainless steel.

The 316L variant limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, eliminating sensitisation risk in welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment. The 316Ti grade stabilises the alloy with titanium (0.70% max) to prevent intergranular corrosion in the 425-870°C sensitisation range. SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti threaded rods are widely specified under ASTM A193 B8M for pressure vessel and piping flange connections, chemical process equipment, and marine structural applications worldwide.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Threaded Rods are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Threaded Rods

Mo (2.0–3.0%) — Pitting & Crevice Resistance
Molybdenum raises the PREN of 316-series stainless to approximately 24–26, providing meaningful resistance to chloride pitting in coastal, marine, and mild chemical environments where 304 stainless fails rapidly. This is the defining advantage of 316 threaded rods over standard 304 rods in exposed structural and process applications.
Low Carbon in 316L — Weld Sensitisation Prevention
Limiting carbon to 0.030% maximum in 316L prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. Threaded rods welded into structural frames or process assemblies retain full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without requiring post-weld annealing — a critical advantage for fabricated equipment.
Titanium Stabilisation in 316Ti — High-Temperature Integrity
The titanium addition in 316Ti (5×C minimum) preferentially combines with carbon, preventing sensitisation during prolonged service in the 425–870°C range. This makes 316Ti threaded rods the correct choice for heat exchanger tie rods, furnace structural connections, and any application involving repeated thermal cycling through the sensitisation temperature band.

?? Anti-galling: SS 316 threaded rods are prone to galling under high torque. Always use molybdenum disulphide or PTFE-based anti-seize. Lubricated values assume K=0.17. Never dry-torque stainless threaded rod assemblies without lubrication - thread seizure is irreversible.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Threaded Rods Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Threaded Rods from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 and 316L threaded rods are the standard fastening solution for chemical reactor tie rods, heat exchanger shell connections, pressure vessel closure studs, and pipe rack structural members in phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and chloride-bearing process environments. 316L is preferred for welded assemblies; 316Ti is specified where service temperatures exceed 425°C.
Fully threaded 316 rods are widely used in marina pontoon connections, offshore platform grating supports, seawall anchor systems, and coastal bridge structural tie rods. The molybdenum content provides adequate resistance to atmospheric chloride corrosion in splash-zone and tidal environments where 304 stainless corrodes within months.
SS 316 threaded rods are specified for membrane housing tie rods, filter press frame assemblies, clarifier mechanism connections, and reverse osmosis pressure vessel end-cap fastening in municipal water treatment and seawater desalination facilities. 316L is preferred for welded frame structures to avoid sensitisation in chlorinated water service.
316L threaded rods meet FDA and EC 1935/2004 food contact material requirements and are used in food processing equipment frames, pharmaceutical reactor tie rods, clean-room structural connections, and hygienic conveyor systems. The low carbon content and smooth surface finish (Ra = 0.8 µm available) prevent bacterial adhesion and facilitate CIP cleaning.

All three grades share the same chromium-nickel-molybdenum base composition and offer similar corrosion resistance at ambient temperature. The key differences are: SS 316 is the standard grade suitable for most general applications. SS 316L limits carbon to 0.030% maximum, making it the correct choice for welded assemblies where post-weld heat treatment is not possible – the low carbon prevents sensitisation and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. SS 316Ti adds titanium as a stabiliser (5×C minimum), preventing sensitisation during prolonged service at 425-870°C. For ambient-temperature applications without welding, all three grades perform identically. For welded structures, specify 316L. For high-temperature service above 425°C, specify 316Ti.
SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti threaded rods are available in metric coarse thread per DIN 975 and DIN 976-1 (M6 through M100), metric fine thread on request, and inch UNC thread per ASME B18.31.3 (¼” through 4″). Standard stock lengths are 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m. Cut-to-length service is available in 1 mm increments. Custom thread forms including BSW, BSF, and BSPP are available with 10-15 working day lead time. All metric threads are manufactured to 6g tolerance class per ISO 965-1.
Galling is the primary assembly risk with stainless steel threaded rods and is caused by adhesive wear between mating stainless surfaces under high contact pressure. To prevent galling: always apply a suitable anti-seize lubricant – PTFE-based paste, molybdenum disulphide grease, or Bostik Never-Seez (standard grade) are all effective. Reduce assembly torque by 15-20% compared to dry values. Assemble at slow, steady speed – avoid impact wrenches for final tightening. Use 316 stainless nuts with a hardness differential where possible, or specify A4-80 nuts against A4-70 rods. Never dry-torque stainless threaded rod assemblies – thread seizure is permanent and the rod must be cut out.
Standard supply includes EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate covering chemical composition and mechanical properties, traceable to the original mill heat number. EN 10204 3.2 TPI-witnessed certificates are available on request for nuclear, pressure vessel, and offshore applications. Additional testing available includes PMI (positive material identification) by XRF on 100% of pieces, intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 Practice E (for 316L welded applications), hardness survey reports, and dimensional inspection reports. All testing is performed by NABL-accredited third-party laboratories.
