Product Overview

What are SS 410 / 416 Bolts?

SS 410 / 416 bolts are martensitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from ASTM A276/A479 bar stock, primarily UNS S41000 (SS 410) and UNS S41600 (SS 416). These alloys are known for their high strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and excellent machinability. SS 410 bolts are heat-treatable to high hardness, while SS 416 bolts offer superior machinability due to their higher sulfur content.

Both grades are magnetic and are widely specified for applications requiring wear resistance, moderate corrosion protection, and reliable mechanical performance. SS 410 / 416 bolts are commonly used in pump assemblies, valve bodies, and general engineering where stainless steel is required but extreme corrosion resistance is not critical.

Material Chemistry

SS 410 / 416 Chemical Composition

SS 410 / 416 Bolts are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 410 / 416 Alloy Composition Matters for Bolts

Cr (11.5–14%) — Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance
Chromium content provides a passive oxide layer, giving SS 410 / 416 bolts moderate resistance to atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion, suitable for pump, valve, and general engineering use.
S (0.15% min in SS 416) — Machinability
SS 416’s high sulfur content dramatically improves machinability, making it ideal for precision-turned bolts and fasteners with tight tolerances or complex geometries.
Martensitic Structure — Heat Treatable Strength
Both SS 410 and SS 416 can be hardened by heat treatment, enabling high tensile and yield strengths for demanding mechanical applications.

Industry Applications

SS 410 / 416 Bolts Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 410 / 416 Bolts from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 410 / 416 bolts are widely used for assembling pump casings, valve bodies, and impellers in water treatment, irrigation, and light chemical service. Their moderate corrosion resistance and high strength make them ideal for non-critical wetted connections.
Used in machine frames, gearboxes, and structural assemblies where high strength and wear resistance are required, but exposure to aggressive chemicals is limited. SS 416 bolts are preferred for CNC-turned fasteners due to their machinability.
Fasteners for food-grade conveyors, mixers, and packaging machinery where moderate corrosion resistance and easy cleaning are needed. SS 410 bolts are suitable for dry or mildly wet environments.
SS 410 / 416 bolts are specified for brake assemblies, chassis components, and railcar hardware where strength, magnetic response, and moderate corrosion resistance are required.

Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on SS 410 / 416 bolts selection and pricing.
SS 410 / 416 bolts are available to DIN 931 (partial thread), DIN 933 (full thread), ISO 4014/4017, and ASME B18.2.1 (inch hex and heavy hex). Stud bolts for flanges are supplied per ASME B16.5. Custom thread forms (BSW, BSF, Whitworth) can be manufactured on request with a typical lead time of 10-15 working days.
Molybdenum-based anti-seize (such as Molykote 1000 or Loctite LB 8012) is recommended for SS 410 / 416 bolts to prevent galling and seizing during assembly. Apply to threads and bearing surfaces. Avoid copper-based anti-seize to prevent galvanic corrosion with stainless steel.
No – SS 410 / 416 bolts are not recommended for marine or high-chloride environments as they are susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. For such applications, use SS 316 or duplex stainless steel bolts. SS 410 / 416 are best for dry or mildly corrosive conditions.
No formal MOQ for standard sizes (M8-M36) held ex-stock – we supply from single pieces for urgent maintenance. Custom sizes or non-standard threads may require a 10 kg minimum. Price breaks are available at 50 pcs, 200 pcs, and 500 pcs.
