Product Overview

What are SS 420 Screws?

SS 420 screws are high-strength, martensitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from AISI 420 (UNS S42000) bar stock, conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM F899. This grade is known for its excellent hardness and moderate corrosion resistance, achieved through heat treatment. SS 420 screws are magnetic and can be hardened up to 50 HRC, making them ideal for applications requiring wear resistance and mechanical strength.

These screws are widely used in pump assemblies, valve components, and food processing equipment where both strength and hygiene are critical. SS 420 screws are also specified for applications where mild corrosive environments are present, and higher hardness is required compared to austenitic stainless steels.

Material Chemistry

SS 420 Chemical Composition

SS 420 Screws are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Chemical Composition per ASTM A276

ElementComposition (%)
Carbon (C)0.15% max
Chromium (Cr)12.0-14.0%
Nickel (Ni)0.75% max
Manganese (Mn)1.0% max

Why SS 420 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

High Carbon Content — Hardening Capability
The elevated carbon content in SS 420 enables the screws to be heat treated to high hardness (up to 50 HRC), providing excellent wear resistance for moving assemblies and high-load joints.
Chromium (12–14%) — Corrosion Resistance
Chromium forms a passive oxide layer, giving SS 420 screws moderate resistance to atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion, suitable for food processing and pump applications.
Magnetic & Machinable
SS 420 is a martensitic stainless steel, making screws magnetic and easily machinable in the annealed state, then hardened after forming for optimal performance.

SS 420 screws are available to DIN 963 (slotted countersunk), DIN 965 (cross recessed), ISO 7046, and ASME B18.6.3 (inch machine screws). Custom thread forms such as UNC, UNF, and Whitworth can be supplied on request with a typical lead time of 10-15 working days.
For SS 420 screws, use a molybdenum-based or nickel-based anti-seize compound (such as Molykote P-37 or Loctite LB 8012) on threads and under the head. This prevents galling and eases disassembly. Avoid copper-based anti-seize to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Yes – SS 420 screws are approved for food contact equipment and are widely used in medical and surgical instruments. They can be polished to a hygienic finish and sterilized. Always request ASTM F899 compliance for medical applications.
No MOQ for standard sizes (M4-M16) held in stock – single-piece orders are accepted for urgent needs. Custom sizes or head types may require a 10 kg minimum. Price breaks are available at 100, 500, and 1000 pieces.
