Product Overview

What are ASTM A490 Studs?

ASTM A490 studs are high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel fasteners designed for structural bolting applications requiring superior tensile and yield strength. Manufactured from alloy steel conforming to ASTM A490, these studs are intended for use in steel-to-steel structural connections, such as bridges, buildings, and heavy construction. ASTM A490 studs are characterized by their minimum tensile strength of 150 ksi (1040 MPa) and are available in both plain and mechanically galvanized finishes. They are not recommended for use in environments where they may be exposed to moisture or corrosive atmospheres unless properly protected.

These studs are commonly supplied as fully threaded rods or double-end studs, and are paired with ASTM A563 or A194 heavy hex nuts. ASTM A490 studs are strictly prohibited from being hot-dip galvanized, due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, and are instead offered with mechanical zinc coatings for corrosion resistance.

Material Chemistry

ASTM A490 Stud Chemical Composition

ASTM A490 Studs are manufactured from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with Cr (0.8–1.1%), Mo (0.15–0.65%), and vanadium additions in B16 grades, controlled per ASTM and ASME SA-193. Cr-Mo additions raise hardenability and creep rupture strength for pressure vessel service; vanadium in B16 extends the allowable service temperature to 538°C.

Chemical Composition per ASTM A490

Carbon (C)0.35-0.53
Manganese (Mn)0.65-1.35
Phosphorus (P)0.035 max
Sulfur (S)0.040 max
Silicon (Si)0.15-0.35
Chromium (Cr)0.45-0.65
Molybdenum (Mo)0.20-0.25
Boron (B)0.0005-0.003

Why ASTM A490 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

High Carbon & Alloy Content — Strength
The elevated carbon, chromium, and molybdenum content in ASTM A490 studs delivers the high tensile and yield strength required for critical structural connections, ensuring reliable load transfer in steel frameworks.
Boron Addition — Hardenability
Boron is added in small amounts to improve hardenability, allowing uniform properties throughout the stud even in large diameters, which is essential for consistent performance in heavy construction.
Strict Phosphorus & Sulfur Limits
Low phosphorus and sulfur levels minimize the risk of embrittlement and improve the toughness and ductility of the studs, reducing the chance of brittle fracture under dynamic loads.

Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on ASTM A490 studs selection and pricing.
ASTM A490 studs are made from quenched and tempered alloy steel and have a minimum tensile strength of 150 ksi, while ASTM A325 studs are made from medium carbon steel with a minimum tensile strength of 120 ksi. A490 studs are used where higher strength is required, but they cannot be hot-dip galvanized due to hydrogen embrittlement risk, unlike A325.
No, ASTM A490 studs must not be hot-dip galvanized or zinc electroplated due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. Only mechanical zinc coatings (mechanical galvanizing) are permitted for corrosion resistance. Always specify the required coating at the time of order.
ASTM A490 studs are typically paired with ASTM A563 or A194 heavy hex nuts and ASTM F436 hardened washers. The nuts must be of equal or greater strength and properly lubricated for correct tensioning.
ASTM A490 studs are not recommended for use in corrosive or wet environments unless protected by an approved mechanical zinc coating. For severe corrosion, consider using stainless steel or weathering steel fasteners instead.
