Product Overview

What are ASTM A490 Bolts?

ASTM A490 bolts are high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel structural bolts designed for critical steel-to-steel connections in bridges, buildings, and heavy construction. Manufactured to ASTM A490/A490M, these bolts offer a minimum tensile strength of 150 ksi (1040 MPa) and are available in both heavy hex and tension control (TC) head styles. ASTM A490 bolts are used where higher strength is required than ASTM A325, and are supplied with a plain, zinc, or mechanical galvanized finish as specified.

These bolts are not permitted for use in atmospheres that are corrosive to high-strength steel, such as marine or chemical environments, unless protected by approved coatings. ASTM A490 bolts are commonly specified for slip-critical and bearing-type connections in steel structures, and are installed using calibrated torque or tensioning methods to ensure joint integrity.

Material Chemistry

ASTM A490 Chemical Composition

ASTM A490 Bolts are manufactured from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with Cr (0.8–1.1%), Mo (0.15–0.65%), and vanadium additions in B16 grades, controlled per ASTM and ASME SA-193. Cr-Mo additions raise hardenability and creep rupture strength for pressure vessel service; vanadium in B16 extends the allowable service temperature to 538°C.

Why ASTM A490 Alloy Composition Matters for Bolts

High Carbon Content — Strength & Hardness
The elevated carbon content in ASTM A490 bolts enables quenching and tempering to achieve the required 150 ksi tensile strength, ensuring reliable performance in high-load structural connections.
Manganese & Silicon — Toughness & Ductility
Manganese and silicon improve toughness and ductility, reducing the risk of brittle fracture under dynamic or impact loads common in steel structures.
Low Alloying — Weldability & Consistency
ASTM A490 bolts are not intended for welding, but the controlled alloy content ensures consistent mechanical properties and reliable installation in critical applications.

Industry Applications

ASTM A490 Bolts Applications — Industries & End Uses

ASTM A490 Bolts from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas pressure vessels, power generation, and petrochemical where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
ASTM A490 bolts are the standard for critical connections in steel bridge construction, including girder splices, truss joints, and bearing assemblies. Their high strength and reliability make them essential for highway, railway, and pedestrian bridges subject to dynamic loads and fatigue.
Heavy hex bolts to ASTM A490 are used in moment connections, column splices, and bracing systems in tall buildings, providing the strength needed for wind, seismic, and gravity loads in structural steel frames.
A490 bolts secure heavy machinery bases, crane rails, and structural supports in power plants, refineries, and manufacturing facilities, where high clamp load and vibration resistance are critical.
Slip-critical and bearing-type connections in stadium roof trusses, cantilevered seating structures, and long-span assemblies rely on ASTM A490 bolts for safety and long-term performance.

ASTM A490 bolts are supplied as heavy hex head bolts per ASME B18.2.6 (inch series) and ISO 898-1 (metric). Tension control (TC) bolts are also available for automated installation. All bolts are fully threaded or partially threaded as specified, and can be supplied with matching ASTM A563 heavy hex nuts and ASTM F436 washers.
ASTM A490 bolts are not permitted to be hot-dip galvanized due to risk of hydrogen embrittlement. Mechanical galvanizing per ASTM B695 is allowed, as well as zinc-aluminum coatings or proprietary systems approved by the engineer. Always specify coating requirements at order placement.
No, ASTM A490 bolts are not weldable and should not be used in atmospheres that are corrosive to high-strength steel, such as marine or chemical plants, unless protected by approved coatings. For corrosive environments, consider ASTM A325 Type 3 (weathering steel) or stainless steel alternatives.
Standard sizes (½”-1½”) are available ex-stock with no formal MOQ – single pieces can be supplied for urgent needs. Custom sizes or special coatings may require a minimum order of 25 kg or as per project requirements. Quantity discounts apply at 100, 500, and 1000 pieces.
