What is ASTM A325?

ASTM A325 is the medium-strength structural bolt specification for high-strength steel construction. Made from medium-carbon steel (1027–1035) or alloy steel (up to 1 inch: min. tensile 825 MPa; 1-1/8 to 1-1/2 inch: 725 MPa). Must be quenched and tempered for sizes ≥ 1 inch. Used in bearing-type and slip-critical (SC) connections. ASTM A325 structural bolts are the workhorse for steel frame construction, bridge structures, industrial buildings and heavy equipment foundations. The ISO metric equivalent is ISO 898-1 Class 8.8. Requires installation torque per AISC Steel Construction Manual or load-indicating washers for slip-critical connections.

ASTM A325 Fasteners Chemical Composition

ASTM A325 fasteners are manufactured from medium carbon boron steel, with controlled additions of carbon, manganese, and boron that enhance hardenability during quench and temper heat treatment. Boron improves core hardness in larger diameters, while manganese contributes to strength and toughness balance. Chromium and molybdenum may be present in trace amounts to refine grain structure and support uniform mechanical properties across bolt sizes, ensuring consistent performance in structural steel connections.

These alloying elements combine to deliver high tensile strength, reliable yield performance, and excellent fatigue resistance, making A325 fasteners ideal for structural bolting in bridges, buildings, and heavy steel frameworks. The quenched and tempered microstructure provides superior clamping force retention under cyclic and static loads. Although not stainless, protective zinc or mechanical galvanizing coatings enhance corrosion resistance in outdoor environments. Their proven mechanical reliability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with structural codes make them the preferred choice for high-strength structural joints requiring dependable, long-term performance.

Applications

ASTM A325 Fasteners Applications

ASTM A325 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for ASTM A325 fasteners include structural; high-strength bolts for steel-to-steel joints.
ASTM A325 heavy hex bolts are widely used in bolted steel building frames where high clamping force and dependable tensile strength are required. They are suitable for beam-to-column connections, splice plates, bracing connections, and other structural joints designed under steel construction codes.
A325 fasteners are used in bridge members, highway structures, pedestrian bridges, and transportation infrastructure when the design calls for high-strength structural bolting. Type 3 weathering steel A325 bolts are often selected for exposed atmospheric environments where compatible weathering steel members are used.
When installed using approved tensioning methods, ASTM A325 bolts can provide the preload needed for slip-critical joints and fatigue-sensitive structural connections. Correct nut, washer, lubrication, coating, and installation procedures are essential for reliable field performance.
These fasteners are commonly specified for industrial buildings, pipe racks, equipment support frames, conveyor structures, crane support steel, and heavy fabrication assemblies. Galvanized or mechanically coated A325 bolts are preferred for outdoor industrial service where plain carbon steel would corrode quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A325 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about ASTM A325 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (Medium Carbon Q&T), applicable standards (ASTM A325), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified ASTM A325 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Type 1: medium-carbon, carbon-boron or medium-carbon alloy steel — the most common. Type 3: weathering (atmospheric-corrosion-resistant) steel, matching A588 steel for exposed weathering steel structures. Type 2 was heavy hex (now discontinued). Always specify the type if matching weathering steel structure.
Torque is not the standard method. AISC requires minimum bolt pre-tension (e.g., 28 kips for 3/4-inch, 53 kips for 1-inch). Calibrated wrench method, turn-of-nut method (half-turn from snug for 4d grip), direct tension indicator (DTI) or twist-off tension-control (TC) bolts are the accepted installation methods.
Generally yes — A325 Type 1 minimum tensile (120 ksi / 825 MPa) and yield (92 ksi / 635 MPa) correspond closely to ISO 898-1 Class 8.8 (800 MPa tensile, 640 MPa yield minimum). However, A325 has specific SAE thread requirements and AISC SC bolt testing that differ from ISO 8.8. They are not interchangeable without engineering review.
ASTM A563 Grade DH or Grade DH3 (weathering) heavy hex nuts for SC connections. Washers: ASTM F436 Type 1 (standard) or Type 3 (weathering). For TC bolt assemblies (twist-off A325-TC), the nut and washer are supplied as a matched assembly.
