What is Inconel 601?

Inconel 601 (UNS N06601) is a nickel-chromium-aluminium alloy with Cr 21–25% and Al 1.0–1.7%, forming a dense Al2O3/Cr2O3 protective scale for outstanding oxidation and carburisation resistance to 1200°C. The aluminium addition sets it apart from Inconel 600 for cyclic high-temperature service where spalling of the oxide scale would occur. Inconel 601 fasteners are specified for industrial furnace fixtures, radiant tubes, heat treatment baskets, petrochemical pyrolysis heaters, gas turbine combustion liners and nuclear plant fuel handling hardware. Covered by ASTM B166 and ASME SB-166.

Inconel 601 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Inconel 601 fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a nickel-chromium-aluminum composition, typically containing 58-63% nickel, 21-25% chromium, and 1-1.7% aluminum. The high nickel content provides a stable austenitic matrix with excellent toughness, while chromium forms a protective oxide layer that resists oxidation and corrosion. Aluminum additions create a tenacious, self-healing aluminum oxide scale that enhances high-temperature stability beyond what chromium alone can achieve. Controlled amounts of iron and trace elements like carbon and manganese further refine strength and weldability characteristics.

These fasteners deliver outstanding resistance to oxidation, carburization, and thermal cycling in extreme environments up to 1150°C. Their excellent resistance to aqueous corrosion, combined with high mechanical strength retention at elevated temperatures, makes them ideal for demanding fastening applications. The alloy maintains dimensional stability and resists creep under sustained thermal and mechanical loading, ensuring reliable joint integrity in furnace components, heat treatment equipment, and petrochemical processing systems where conventional stainless steel fasteners would fail prematurely.

Applications

Inconel 601 Fasteners Applications

Inconel 601 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Inconel 601 fasteners include heat-treating baskets, radiant tubes, thermal cycling applications.
Inconel 601 bolts, studs and washers are widely used in furnace muffles, radiant tubes, baskets, retorts and heat treatment fixtures where fasteners must resist oxidation, scaling and thermal cycling at elevated temperatures.
Alloy 601 fasteners provide reliable bolting performance in heaters, flare systems, catalyst support equipment and thermal processing sections exposed to hot gases, sulfur compounds and oxidizing process atmospheres.
Inconel 601 fasteners are selected for boiler components, burner assemblies, exhaust systems and high-temperature ducting where stainless steel fasteners may lose oxidation resistance or mechanical stability.
The alloy is suitable for combustor hardware, engine test rigs, exhaust fixtures and industrial burner components requiring nickel alloy fasteners with strong resistance to heat, oxidation and repeated temperature cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel 601 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Inconel 601 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N06601), applicable standards (ASTM B166), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Inconel 601 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Inconel 601’s 1.0–1.7% Al forms a protective Al2O3 subscale beneath Cr2O3, dramatically improving cyclic oxidation and carburisation resistance above 900°C. Inconel 600 lacks aluminium and is unsuitable for carburising endothermic furnace atmospheres at high temperature.
Inconel 601 is usable to 1200°C in cyclic oxidising service and 1093°C continuous. For >1200°C, Inconel 602CA (UNS N06025) or oxide-dispersion-strengthened alloys are needed.
Yes — 601 is one of the best standard alloys for carburisation resistance. The Al addition inhibits carbon diffusion at grain boundaries. Used for carburising furnace baskets, grids and retorts in endothermic and exothermic atmospheres.
ASTM B166 (rod and bar) and ASTM B168 (plate/sheet). ASME SB-166 and SB-168 for pressure-vessel code. Full MTC with chemical analysis and tensile test per EN 10204 3.1.
