Product Overview

What are Inconel 718 Nuts?

Inconel 718 nuts are precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium-iron alloy fasteners machined from UNS N07718 bar stock conforming to ASTM B637. The alloy derives its exceptional strength from a controlled aging treatment that precipitates gamma-prime (Ni3Al) and gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phases, delivering a minimum tensile strength of 1241 MPa in the aged condition – nearly double that of annealed Inconel 625.

With a service temperature ceiling of 650°C and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, Inconel 718 nuts are the fastener of choice for gas turbine casings, aerospace structural joints, and high-pressure sour-service wellhead assemblies. They are fully compliant with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 at hardness levels up to 40 HRC and are listed under AMS 5662 and AMS 5664 for aerospace procurement.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 718 Chemical Composition

Inconel 718 Nuts are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Why Inconel 718 Alloy Composition Matters for Nuts

Nb+Ta (4.75–5.50%) — Precipitation Hardening via Gamma-Double-Prime
Niobium is the primary strengthening agent in Inconel 718. During the two-stage aging cycle (720°C/8h + 620°C/8h), niobium precipitates as the metastable gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phase, raising tensile strength to 1241 MPa minimum — making these nuts suitable for critical bolted joints in gas turbines and pressure vessels.
Cr (17–21%) — Oxidation and Corrosion Resistance
Chromium forms a stable Cr2O3 passive film that resists oxidation up to 650°C in continuous service and provides adequate resistance to mild acids and chloride environments. Combined with molybdenum, it ensures the nut threads remain corrosion-free in sour gas and offshore environments.
Controlled C, P, S, B — Grain Boundary Integrity
The tightly controlled carbon (0.08% max), phosphorus (0.015% max), sulphur (0.015% max), and boron (0.006% max) limits prevent grain boundary embrittlement and sensitisation during the aging heat treatment, ensuring the nut retains full ductility and impact toughness after precipitation hardening.

Industry Applications

Inconel 718 Nuts Applications — Industries & End Uses

Inconel 718 Nuts from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation where excellent corrosion resistance and 760 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Inconel 718 heavy hex nuts and coupling nuts are the standard specification for gas turbine casing bolted joints, compressor disc assemblies, and combustor liner attachment hardware. The alloy’s gamma-double-prime strengthening mechanism retains full proof load capacity up to 650°C, making it the preferred choice over Inconel 625 where elevated-temperature mechanical strength is the primary design driver. AMS 5664 specification.
Heavy hex nuts paired with B7M stud bolts or Inconel 718 stud bolts are specified for ASME B16.5 Class 900-2500 wellhead flanges, BOP stack connections, and Christmas tree assemblies in H2S-bearing sour service. Fully compliant with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 at hardness =40 HRC. Shell DEP and ExxonMobil EMSP listed for sour-service flange nut applications.
Inconel 718 nuts are used in aircraft engine mount attachments, nacelle structural fastener assemblies, and thrust reverser locking hardware where the combination of high tensile strength (1241 MPa), fatigue resistance, and oxidation resistance to 650°C is required simultaneously. Supplied to AMS 5662/5664 with full material traceability per AS9100D.
Inconel 718 nuts are specified for reactor pressure vessel (RPV) closure stud assemblies, control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) flanges, and primary coolant loop bolted connections in PWR and BWR plants. The alloy’s resistance to stress corrosion cracking in high-temperature pressurised water and its low cobalt content (1.0% max) minimise activation concerns. Supplied per ASME Section III requirements.

Inconel 718 Nuts — Frequently Asked Questions

Browse expert answers to common questions about Inconel 718 Nuts from RealBolt — covering ASTM standards, max service temperature, corrosion resistance, available sizes, lead times, and MTC certification. Contact our technical team directly for project-specific guidance on Inconel 718 nuts selection and pricing.
Inconel 718 hex nuts are available to DIN 934 (standard hex, metric), DIN 6915 (heavy hex, metric), ISO 4032 (style 1), ISO 4033 (style 2 tall), and ASME B18.2.2 (inch hex and heavy hex). For ASME B16.5 flange applications, heavy hex nuts per ASME B18.2.2 are standard. Coupling nuts, jam nuts, and slotted nuts are available on request. Custom thread forms including BSW, UNF, and BSPP can be produced with a 15 working day lead time.
Inconel 718 nuts are supplied in the precipitation-hardened (aged) condition per AMS 2774. The standard two-stage aging cycle is: solution anneal at 980°C, then age at 720°C for 8 hours, furnace cool to 620°C, hold for a further 8 hours, then air cool. This produces the gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) precipitate responsible for the 1241 MPa minimum tensile strength. Nuts supplied in the annealed-only condition have significantly lower strength and are not suitable for structural or pressure-containing applications.
Yes – Inconel 718 nuts are routinely paired with Inconel 718 stud bolts for gas turbine and aerospace applications. However, galling risk is elevated when identical alloys are used together under high contact pressure. Always apply a nickel-based anti-seize compound (Molykote P-37 or Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE Pure Nickel) to all thread surfaces and the nut bearing face before assembly. For oil and gas flange applications, Inconel 718 nuts are frequently paired with B7M or L7M stud bolts per ASME B16.5 requirements.
The key difference is strengthening mechanism and maximum service temperature. Inconel 718 nuts are precipitation hardened to 1241 MPa tensile strength and are rated to 650°C continuous service – ideal for gas turbines, aerospace, and high-pressure wellheads. Inconel 625 nuts are solid-solution strengthened to 758 MPa and are rated to 980°C, with superior corrosion resistance (PREN 51+) in seawater and aggressive chemical environments. Choose Inconel 718 where mechanical strength governs the design; choose Inconel 625 where corrosion resistance or higher temperature oxidation resistance is the primary requirement.
