Product Overview

What are Inconel 718 Studs?

Inconel 718 studs are precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium-iron alloy fasteners manufactured from UNS N07718 bar stock conforming to ASTM B637. The alloy derives its exceptional strength from gamma-prime and gamma-double-prime precipitate phases formed during a two-stage age hardening treatment, delivering a minimum tensile strength of 1241 MPa – nearly double that of annealed Inconel 625.

The combination of high tensile strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and oxidation resistance up to 700°C makes Inconel 718 studs the preferred choice for gas turbine casing joints, aerospace structural connections, and high-pressure wellhead bolting. These studs are specified under AMS 5662/5663, ASTM B637, and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour-service applications where both strength and corrosion resistance are simultaneously required.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 718 Chemical Composition

Inconel 718 Studs are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Why Inconel 718 Alloy Composition Matters for Studs

Nb+Ta (4.75–5.50%) — Precipitation Hardening via Gamma-Double-Prime
Niobium is the primary strengthening agent in Inconel 718. During the two-stage ageing treatment (720°C/8h + 620°C/8h), niobium forms the metastable gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phase that gives Inconel 718 studs their exceptional tensile strength of 1241 MPa — far exceeding any solid-solution nickel alloy fastener.
Mo (2.80–3.30%) — Corrosion Resistance in Aggressive Media
Molybdenum contributes to resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments. While not as corrosion-resistant as Inconel 625, Inconel 718 studs perform reliably in mildly sour gas service and process environments where high mechanical load is the primary design driver.
Controlled Ageing — Predictable Strength Without Overageing Risk
The gamma-double-prime phase in Inconel 718 is kinetically sluggish, meaning the alloy resists overageing at service temperatures below 650°C. This makes Inconel 718 studs dimensionally and mechanically stable over long service intervals in gas turbine and pressure vessel applications.

Industry Applications

Inconel 718 Studs Applications — Industries & End Uses

Inconel 718 Studs from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation where excellent corrosion resistance and 760 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Inconel 718 stud bolt sets are the standard specification for ASME B16.5 Class 900-2500 wellhead flanges, blowout preventer (BOP) ram bonnets, and Christmas tree body connections where both high tensile load and H2S sour service resistance are required simultaneously. Compliant with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 at hardness =40 HRC.
Inconel 718 studs are used extensively in gas turbine compressor casing joints, turbine rear frame connections, and combustor liner attachment hardware. The alloy’s fatigue strength and resistance to stress relaxation at temperatures up to 650°C make it the dominant fastener material in both commercial and military aero-engine assemblies per AMS 5662/5663.
Stud bolt sets for reactor pressure vessel (RPV) head closures, steam generator channel head flanges, and pressuriser nozzle connections are manufactured from Inconel 718 per ASME Section III requirements. The alloy’s low cobalt content minimises activation under neutron flux, and its high yield strength reduces stud count per flange.
Inconel 718 studs retain excellent toughness and tensile properties at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C, making them suitable for LNG storage tank nozzle flanges, cryogenic valve bonnets, and liquid nitrogen process equipment where carbon steel and standard stainless fasteners suffer ductile-to-brittle transition.

Inconel 718 Studs — Frequently Asked Questions

Solution-annealed Inconel 718 studs (AMS 5662) have a tensile strength of approximately 896 MPa and are used where formability or weldability is the priority. Age-hardened studs (AMS 5663) undergo a two-stage precipitation treatment – 720°C for 8 hours followed by 620°C for 8 hours – which raises tensile strength to a minimum of 1241 MPa through formation of the gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phase. For structural bolting, pressure vessel flanges, and wellhead applications, age-hardened condition is always specified. Solution-annealed studs are only used where the assembly will be welded in place and post-weld heat treatment is planned.
Yes – Inconel 718 studs are listed in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 Table A.3 for use in H2S sour service environments, subject to a maximum hardness of 40 HRC. Our studs are manufactured and age-hardened to achieve 36-39 HRC, with a full hardness survey report available per NACE requirements. For Class 900-2500 wellhead flange stud bolt sets, we supply matched stud and nut sets with a single EN 10204 3.1 MTC covering both components and confirming NACE compliance.
Inconel 718 studs should be paired with Inconel 718 heavy hex nuts per ASTM A194 Grade 8 equivalent or Inconel 718 nuts per ASTM B637/AMS 5663. For ASME B16.5 flange stud bolt sets, we supply 2H heavy hex nuts in Inconel 718 as standard. Using mismatched nut materials – particularly lower-strength alloys – risks thread stripping under the high clamp loads generated by age-hardened 718 studs. Galling is controlled by applying nickel-based anti-seize to all threads before assembly.
Inconel 718 studs are rated for continuous service up to 700°C. Above this temperature, the gamma-double-prime strengthening phase begins to dissolve and transform to the equilibrium delta phase (Ni3Nb orthorhombic), causing progressive loss of tensile strength and creep resistance. For applications above 700°C – such as gas turbine hot section hardware – Inconel 625, Waspaloy, or Inconel 740H studs are more appropriate choices. We can advise on alloy selection based on your specific operating temperature and load profile.
