The nickel superalloy explained

What is Inconel Fasteners?

Inconel is a family of austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloys engineered for extreme high-temperature and corrosion-resistant service. The alloy series — including Inconel 600, 601, 625 and 718 — retains exceptional mechanical strength above 600°C, making it the go-to material for gas-turbine components, heat exchangers, nuclear reactor cores and deep-sea oil-well equipment. Inconel fasteners are specified where standard stainless or carbon steel would fail under thermal creep, oxidation or chloride stress-corrosion cracking. The primary fastener grades are Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) for marine and chemical service, and Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) for high-temperature aerospace applications.

Inconel Fasteners Applications — Industries & Use Cases

Inconel Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified by engineers and procurement teams across demanding industries where outstanding oxidation resistance, high-temperature creep strength, and chloride stress corrosion cracking immunity is critical to fastener performance and service life. Primary end-use sectors for Inconel Fasteners include oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, nuclear power, and industrial power generation — click each industry below to see specific application details and recommended grades.
Inconel fasteners are specified for subsea wellhead equipment, Christmas trees, BOP stacks, heat exchangers and sour-gas piping where H₂S corrosion and high pressure coexist. Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) is preferred for offshore platforms, meeting NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service; Inconel 718 is used in HP/HT completion tools requiring >1034 MPa yield strength.
Inconel 718 fasteners are standard in jet-engine casings, turbine discs and exhaust systems. AMS 5663 / AMS 5664 specifications govern aerospace-grade Inconel fasteners with strict heat-treat requirements.
Used in reactors, pressure vessels and heat-exchanger tube supports exposed to nitric acid, phosphoric acid and halide-bearing environments where austenitic stainless would pit or crack.
Inconel 600 is approved for nuclear reactor steam-generator applications, available with nuclear-grade traceability and ASME N-certificate support.
Turbine-casing bolts, heat-recovery steam-generator (HRSG) fasteners and flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) system components operating under thermal cycling.

Inconel vs Hastelloy vs Stainless Steel

This comparison table helps engineers choose between Inconel Fasteners, Hastelloy Fasteners, and Stainless Steel Fasteners based on maximum service temperature, tensile strength, corrosion resistance in HCl and H₂SO₄, NACE MR0175 compliance, and relative cost — so you select the most technically and commercially appropriate alloy for your application. Use this data to make an informed alloy selection for your specific operating environment, design code, and budget — or contact RealBolt’s technical team for a project-specific recommendation.
Property Inconel 625 Hastelloy C276 SS 316L
Max service temp 980°C 1038°C 800°C
HCl corrosion resistance Good Exceptional Poor
Seawater / pitting resist. Excellent (PREN 51) Excellent Moderate
Tensile strength (min) 758 MPa 690 MPa 485 MPa
Relative cost High High Low
NACE MR0175 compliant Yes Yes Conditional

Verdict: Inconel 625 is the best all-round choice for sour-gas, subsea and high-temperature corrosive service. Choose Hastelloy for pure HCl resistance; SS 316L suffices for cost-sensitive general duty.

Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) excels in corrosion resistance — ideal for marine, chemical and oil & gas environments. Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) offers higher mechanical strength and is preferred for aerospace and high-temperature structural applications. If corrosion is your priority, choose 625; if high strength above 500°C, choose 718.
We manufacture Inconel fasteners from M6 (¼″) up to M100 (4″) diameter, with lengths from 10 mm to 3000 mm. Custom sizes, non-standard thread pitches and special finishes are accepted with a 2–3 week lead time. Imperial sizes (UNC, UNF) are also available.
Yes — like all nickel alloys, Inconel fasteners are prone to galling during assembly. We recommend a nickel-based anti-seize lubricant, slow consistent torquing, and slightly undersized nuts. Pre-lubricated fasteners are supplied on request.
Every shipment includes EN 10204 MTC 3.1 (or 3.2 on request) with full heat-number traceability, chemical composition and mechanical test results. NACE MR0175 and PMI reports are available for sour-service orders.
