What is Inconel 718?

Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) is the world’s most widely used aerospace superalloy. Precipitation hardening via γ” (Ni3Nb) and γ’ (Ni3Al/Ti) phases produces 1240 MPa tensile and 1034 MPa yield in the aged condition. Cr 17–21% provides oxidation resistance to 704°C with excellent fatigue performance under cyclic loading. Inconel 718 fasteners are specified for gas turbine casings, compressor discs, airframe structural joints and downhole tool connections requiring ≥150 ksi (1034 MPa) yield strength. Governed by AMS 5662 (solution annealed) and AMS 5663 (precipitation hardened). NACE MR0175 compliant at ≤40 HRC.

Inconel 718 Fasteners Chemical Composition

Inconel 718 Fasteners derive their exceptional performance from a carefully balanced composition of nickel, chromium, and iron, strengthened by niobium and molybdenum additions. Niobium promotes the formation of gamma double-prime precipitates, which provide outstanding age-hardening capability and high-temperature strength retention. Chromium contributes to oxidation and corrosion resistance, while molybdenum enhances resistance to pitting and crevice attack in aggressive environments, making the alloy highly versatile across demanding industrial conditions.

These alloying characteristics translate into fasteners with superior tensile and yield strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and stable mechanical performance from cryogenic temperatures up to 700°C. Inconel 718 Fasteners resist stress corrosion cracking, oxidation, and creep, making them ideal for aerospace engines, gas turbines, oil and gas equipment, and other high-stress, high-temperature assemblies requiring long-term reliability and structural integrity.

Applications

Inconel 718 Fasteners Applications

Inconel 718 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for Inconel 718 fasteners include aerospace gas turbines, liquid rocket engines, cryogenic tankage.
Inconel 718 bolts, screws, studs and nuts are widely used in turbine engines, exhaust assemblies, thrust reversers, airframe joints and hot-section support hardware where high tensile strength, fatigue resistance and oxidation resistance are required.
Alloy 718 fasteners are selected for wellhead equipment, valves, blowout preventers, risers, pumps and subsea connectors because they resist chloride stress corrosion cracking and maintain high preload in sour, high-pressure environments.
Inconel 718 fasteners retain toughness and strength at cryogenic temperatures, making them suitable for LNG plants, liquid oxygen systems, liquid hydrogen equipment, cryogenic valves and low-temperature pressure vessels.
Inconel 718 bolting is used in gas turbines, heat exchangers, furnace hardware, nuclear components and high-temperature pressure equipment where conventional stainless steel fasteners can lose strength, relax or oxidize prematurely.

Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel 718 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about Inconel 718 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS N07718), applicable standards (AMS 5662), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified Inconel 718 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
Solution-annealed (AMS 5662) has ~1000 MPa tensile; precipitation-hardened (AMS 5663) reaches 1240 MPa by ageing at 720°C/8h + 620°C/8h. Fasteners are supplied in the fully aged condition unless otherwise specified.
AMS 5662 (solution annealed bar), AMS 5663 (precipitation hardened bar) and AMS 5664 (sheet/plate). ASTM B637 for precipitation-hardening Ni alloy bar. Full heat treatment records provided with MTC.
Yes. Inconel 718 retains excellent impact toughness to -253°C with no ductile-to-brittle transition. Used for cryogenic pump and valve fasteners in LNG, LOX and LH2 service.
Inconel 718 is susceptible to thread galling. Use Molykote 1000 or silver-based anti-seize for assembly. Torque values should be reduced 15% from steel equivalents due to the higher friction coefficient.
