The lightweight corrosion-proof alloy explained

What is Titanium Fasteners?

Titanium is a lightweight, high-strength transition metal with density approximately 60% lower than steel and a natural oxide film (TiO₂) that provides exceptional corrosion resistance to seawater, aqueous chloride solutions, oxidising acids and body fluids. The fastener grades — including the commercially pure Grade 2 and the alloyed Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) — span from maximum corrosion resistance to maximum strength applications respectively. Titanium fasteners are specified for aerospace structural assemblies, marine seawater hardware, chemical processing equipment handling reducing acids, and medical devices where biocompatibility is required. The combination of 896 MPa tensile strength (Grade 5) at 4.43 g/cm³ density makes titanium fasteners approximately 43% lighter than equivalent-strength stainless steel bolts — the critical advantage in weight-sensitive aerospace and motorsport applications.

Titanium Fasteners Applications — Industries & Use Cases

Titanium Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified by engineers and procurement teams across demanding industries where seawater immune corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and 45% lower density than stainless steel for aerospace and marine fastening is critical to fastener performance and service life. Primary end-use sectors for Titanium Fasteners include aerospace structural assemblies, marine and offshore seawater systems, chemical processing, medical devices, and motorsport — click each industry below to see specific application details and recommended grades.
Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400) fasteners are the standard for aircraft structural assemblies, engine pylons, nacelle attachment hardware and helicopter rotor heads — offering 896 MPa tensile strength at 4.43 g/cm³ density.
Titanium Grade 2 fasteners are fully immune to seawater corrosion, crevice corrosion and biofouling. Used in seawater heat exchanger flanges, offshore riser clamps and desalination plant hardware with zero corrosion maintenance.
Titanium Grade 7 (Pd-alloyed, UNS R52400) is specified for HCl, H₂SO₄ and wet chlorine service where Grade 2 would be at risk. Used in chemical reactor bolting, chlor-alkali equipment and pickling tank internals.
Titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5 fasteners are biocompatible (ISO 5832-3) and used in pharmaceutical processing vessels, medical implant jigs, surgical instrument assembly and cleanroom equipment.
Grade 5 titanium fasteners are standard in Formula 1, MotoGP and military vehicle applications where weight reduction without strength sacrifice is critical. Typical weight saving 40–45% vs equivalent-strength steel bolts.

Titanium vs Stainless Steel vs Duplex Steel

This comparison table helps aerospace engineers, marine designers, and offshore procurement managers evaluate Titanium Fasteners against Stainless Steel and Duplex Steel options based on weight and density, seawater corrosion and biofouling resistance, tensile strength, biocompatibility, NACE MR0175 compliance, and cost — for applications where strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion immunity are simultaneously critical. Use this data to make an informed alloy selection for your specific operating environment, design code, and budget — or contact RealBolt’s technical team for a project-specific recommendation.
Property Titanium Gr.5 SS 316L Duplex 2205
Density 4.43 g/cm3 7.98 g/cm3 7.82 g/cm3
Seawater resistance Excellent (immune) Moderate Good
Tensile strength (min) 896 MPa 485 MPa 620 MPa
Strength-to-weight ratio Highest Medium Medium
Relative cost Very High Medium Medium-High
NACE MR0175 compliant Yes Conditional Yes

Verdict: Titanium Grade 5 is the choice for maximum strength-to-weight and full seawater immunity. Duplex 2205 offers better cost-to-strength for structural offshore. SS 316L is adequate for mild corrosion where weight is not critical.

Titanium Fasteners — Common Questions Answered by Our Technical Team

Browse the expert answers below to the most frequently asked questions about Titanium Fasteners — covering Grade 2 vs Grade 5 selection, weight saving versus stainless steel, seawater corrosion immunity, AMS 4928 aerospace certification, anti-galling precautions, biocompatibility, NACE MR0175 compliance, and available sizes with AS 9100D and ASTM B348 documentation. If your question is not answered here, contact the RealBolt technical team directly for grade-specific guidance, project support, and competitive pricing on Titanium Fasteners.
Titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5 are approximately 45% lighter than equivalent stainless steel fasteners (density 4.43–4.51 g/cm³ vs 7.93 g/cm³ for SS 316L). For an equivalent-strength Grade 5 titanium bolt vs a SS 316L bolt, the titanium version weighs 43% less — significant in weight-critical aerospace, motorsport and offshore applications.
Titanium Grade 2 (CP Ti) is fully immune to seawater corrosion, crevice corrosion and biofouling — superior corrosion resistance to even Super Duplex. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is also highly corrosion resistant but primarily chosen for aerospace where strength matters more than corrosion alone. For marine hardware, Grade 2 is the standard choice.
Yes, but galvanic corrosion between titanium and SS 316L is minimal due to their similar electrochemical potential. However, titanium in contact with carbon steel will accelerate carbon steel corrosion. Always use titanium fasteners with titanium or stainless steel mating surfaces, with PTFE tape or MoS₂ anti-seize to prevent galling.
Aerospace titanium fasteners are governed by AMS 4928 (Ti-6Al-4V bar), AMS 4965 (annealed), AMS 2631 (ultrasonic inspection) and NAS (National Aerospace Standard) specifications. We supply titanium fasteners with full aerospace material traceability, heat certificates and, where required, first-article inspection reports.
