Marine & non-sparking copper alloy fasteners explained

What is Copper Alloy Fasteners?

Copper alloy fasteners encompass Naval Brass (C46400) and Aluminium Bronze (C63000) – two distinct copper-base alloys covering marine hardware and non-sparking hazardous area applications respectively. Naval Brass contains Cu 59-62%, Zn balance and Sn 0.5-1%, where the tin addition prevents dezincification in seawater. Aluminium Bronze C63000 contains Cu base, Al 9-11%, Ni 4-5.5% and Fe 2-4%, providing 621 MPa tensile strength and non-sparking properties. Copper alloy fasteners are specified for boat deck hardware, seacock bonnet bolts, marine through-hull fittings, ATEX Zone 1 hazardous area equipment and pump impeller assemblies where non-sparking, biofouling-resistant fasteners are required. Naval Brass is dezincification-resistant per BS 2871 CZ112, while Aluminium Bronze C63000 meets MIL-B-24059 for naval non-sparking hardware.

Copper Alloy Fasteners Applications — Industries & Use Cases

Copper Alloy Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified by engineers and procurement teams across demanding industries where ATEX-compliant non-sparking properties, seawater corrosion resistance, and dezincification resistance for marine and hazardous area fastening is critical to fastener performance and service life. Primary end-use sectors for Copper Alloy Fasteners include marine shipbuilding and sea cock hardware, ATEX hazardous areas in oil and gas, desalination plants, naval defence, and offshore marine — click each industry below to see specific application details and recommended grades.
Naval Brass (C46400) fasteners are used for boat deck hardware, propeller shaft fasteners, seacock bonnet bolts and marine through-hull fittings. Tin content (0.5–1%) prevents dezincification in seawater.
Aluminium Bronze C63000 and Naval Brass are ATEX-compliant non-sparking fastener materials for use in refineries, chemical plants, grain elevators and explosive storage facilities where ferrous fasteners are prohibited.
Aluminium Bronze C63000 pump impellers, wear rings and shaft fasteners resist cavitation, erosion and seawater corrosion in seawater lift pumps, fire suppression systems and bilge pumps.
Aluminium Bronze provides natural anti-galling properties against stainless steel mating surfaces. Used in valve stem packing gland nuts, gate valve yoke bolting and control valve trim fasteners.
Naval Brass and Aluminium Bronze fasteners are specified for submarine through-hull penetrations, propeller blade retaining bolts and external hull fittings on warships where seawater immunity and non-magnetic properties are simultaneously required.

Copper Alloy vs Cupro Nickel vs Stainless Steel

This comparison table helps marine architects, offshore safety managers, and procurement engineers evaluate Copper Alloy Fasteners against Cupro Nickel and Stainless Steel options based on ATEX non-sparking compliance, seawater corrosion resistance, biofouling resistance, MIL and DEF STAN naval specifications, tensile strength, and relative material cost for marine hardware, hazardous area equipment, and naval vessel applications. Use this data to make an informed alloy selection for your specific operating environment, design code, and budget — or contact RealBolt’s technical team for a project-specific recommendation.
Property Al Bronze C63000 Cupro Nickel 70/30 SS 316L
Non-sparking (ATEX Zone 1) Yes Yes No
Tensile strength (min) 621 MPa 380 MPa 485 MPa
Seawater resistance Good Excellent Moderate
MIL specification MIL-B-24059 MIL-C-15726 N/A
Hardness Rb 90 Rb 65 Rb 80
Relative cost Medium Medium Medium

Verdict: Aluminium Bronze C63000 is the standard for ATEX non-sparking fasteners combining structural strength with safety. Cupro Nickel 70/30 is preferred for purely seawater immersion service. SS 316L is chosen for corrosion resistance in non-hazardous areas.

Naval Brass C46400 (Cu 59-62%, Sn 0.5-1%) is the standard marine fastener brass with tin preventing dezincification in seawater. It has 483 MPa tensile strength. Aluminium Bronze C63000 (Al 9-11%, Ni 4-5.5%, Fe 2-4%) is stronger (621 MPa), harder and non-sparking – preferred for hazardous area tools and high-strength marine components.
Yes. Aluminium Bronze C63000 and Naval Brass C46400 are non-sparking materials certified for ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. Used in oil refinery, petrochemical, grain elevator, ammunition storage and fireworks factory fastening applications where ferrous sparking fasteners are prohibited.
Dezincification is selective corrosion where zinc leaches from brass in seawater leaving a porous copper sponge. Standard yellow brass (60/40 Cu/Zn) is highly susceptible. Naval Brass prevents this with 0.5-1% tin addition and zinc content limited to 41% max, making C46400 safe for direct seawater immersion.
We supply Naval Brass and Aluminium Bronze fasteners in metric (M6-M64), unified UNC/UNF (1/4in-2.5in) and BSW/BSF Whitworth threads for legacy marine retrofit. Socket head cap screws, hex bolts, nuts, stud bolts and washers in both alloys. Custom machining available from bar stock.
