What is SS 420?

SS 420 (UNS S42000) is a martensitic stainless steel with higher carbon (C >0.15%) than SS 410, enabling hardening to 52 HRC and 1900 MPa in the martensitic condition. The high hardness makes it ideal for cutting tools, surgical instruments and valve trim. Corrosion resistance is similar to SS 410 — better than carbon steel but inferior to austenitic grades. SS 420 fasteners are used in valve trim (seats, stems, balls), pump wear rings, dies and high-strength bolting in mildly corrosive environments. Not suitable for chloride service. Governed by ASTM A276 for bar stock.

Chemical Composition

SS 420 fasteners are a martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 12-14% chromium and 0.15% carbon, which are the primary elements responsible for its distinctive properties. The high carbon content enables significant hardening through heat treatment, allowing the material to achieve superior tensile and yield strength compared to austenitic grades. Chromium provides the fundamental passive oxide layer necessary for corrosion resistance, while the carbon-chromium balance allows precise control over hardness and wear characteristics during quenching and tempering operations, making this alloy highly versatile for demanding mechanical applications.

These compositional characteristics translate into fasteners with exceptional hardness, wear resistance and mechanical strength, ideal for high-stress applications requiring dimensional stability under load. Although corrosion resistance is moderate compared to austenitic grades, SS 420 performs well in mildly corrosive environments and offers good resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Its combination of hardenability, strength and reasonable corrosion protection makes it particularly suitable for cutlery, surgical instruments, valve components and fastener applications demanding durability, edge retention and reliable performance under mechanical stress and moderate environmental exposure.

Applications

SS 420 Fasteners Applications

SS 420 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for SS 420 fasteners include cutlery grade; high hardness; surgical and dental instrument fasteners.
SS 420 fasteners are used in pump housings, valve components, compressor hardware and shaft mounted assemblies where higher hardness and thread strength are needed in mildly corrosive service.
The grade is widely selected for plastic molds, die sets, clamping plates and tooling fixtures because heat treatment gives SS 420 screws and studs strong wear resistance and good dimensional stability.
Passivated SS 420 fasteners suit knives, cutters, guides, guards and packaging machinery that require stainless behavior plus higher surface hardness than austenitic grades can provide.
Use SS 420 bolts, socket screws and nuts for machine guards, couplings, wear plates and precision equipment exposed to dry or mildly wet environments where chloride attack is limited.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 420 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about SS 420 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (UNS S42000), applicable standards (ASTM A276), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified SS 420 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
SS 420 achieves 50–52 HRC when hardened from 980–1040°C and oil-quenched, then tempered at 150–200°C. For maximum corrosion resistance in the hardened condition, temper at 300–350°C (HRC ~45). Avoid 370–565°C temper to prevent embrittlement. Full heat treatment records with hardness survey on MTC.
Yes. SS 420’s high hardness provides wear resistance for valve balls and seats in mildly corrosive service. For aggressive corrosion service (seawater, acids), SS 316 + hard-faced or Inconel 625 is preferred. SS 420 is standard for API 6A wellhead gate valve trim.
ASTM A276 (bar), ASTM A108 (cold-finished). No dedicated ASTM bolt standard — SS 420 fasteners are machined from ASTM A276 bar. ASME SA-276 for pressure-vessel applications.
Yes, for mildly acidic food environments at ambient temperature. SS 420 cutlery grade is used for knives and cutting surfaces. For equipment washed with CIP (Clean-In-Place) chemicals, SS 316L is preferred for chloride SCC immunity.
