Product Overview

What are Inconel 718 Screws?

Inconel 718 screws are precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium-iron alloy fasteners machined from UNS N07718 bar stock conforming to ASTM B637. The alloy derives its exceptional strength from a dual precipitation hardening mechanism involving gamma-prime (Ni3Al) and gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phases, delivering a minimum tensile strength of 1241 MPa in the aged condition – nearly double that of annealed Inconel 625.

With a service temperature range extending to 700°C and outstanding resistance to relaxation under sustained load, Inconel 718 screws are the preferred fastener for gas turbine casings, aerospace structural joints, and high-pressure cryogenic equipment. They are manufactured and tested in accordance with AMS 5662, AMS 5664, and NACE MR0175 for sour-service applications where hardness must not exceed 40 HRC.

Material Chemistry

Inconel 718 Chemical Composition

Inconel 718 Screws are manufactured from a nickel-chromium superalloy containing nickel (72% min), chromium (14–17%), and iron (6–10%). Each element is precisely controlled per ASTM — nickel provides chloride SCC immunity, chromium drives high-temperature oxidation resistance, and iron balances structural stability and alloy cost.

Why Inconel 718 Alloy Composition Matters for Screws

Nb+Ta (4.75–5.50%) — Precipitation Hardening via Gamma-Double-Prime
Niobium is the primary strengthening agent in Inconel 718. It forms the metastable gamma-double-prime (Ni3Nb) phase during the two-stage ageing treatment, driving tensile strength to 1241 MPa minimum — making 718 screws the highest-strength nickel alloy fastener in routine production.
Mo (2.80–3.30%) — Solid-Solution Strengthening and Corrosion Resistance
Molybdenum contributes to solid-solution strengthening and improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments. Combined with chromium at 17–21%, Inconel 718 screws resist oxidation continuously to 700°C and intermittently to 980°C.
Controlled C, P, S, B — Fatigue and Creep Performance
Tight limits on carbon (0.08% max), phosphorus, sulphur, and boron suppress grain boundary embrittlement and improve fatigue crack propagation resistance — critical for screws subjected to cyclic loading in turbine casings and rotating machinery.

Industry Applications

Inconel 718 Screws Applications — Industries & End Uses

Inconel 718 Screws from RealBolt are specified across oil and gas, aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation where excellent corrosion resistance and 760 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
Inconel 718 screws are the standard fastener for gas turbine compressor casing joints, combustor liner attachments, turbine blade retaining hardware, and jet engine nacelle structural connections. Specified under AMS 5662/5664 and approved by GE Aviation, Rolls-Royce, and Pratt & Whitney material specifications. Fatigue life exceeds 107 cycles at 650°C.
Socket head cap screws and hex screws in Inconel 718 are specified for high-pressure wellhead equipment, subsurface safety valve (SSSV) bodies, and downhole tool assemblies where H2S partial pressure exceeds NACE MR0175 thresholds. Hardness controlled to 40 HRC max per NACE ISO 15156-3.
Inconel 718 screws are used in pressurised water reactor (PWR) and boiling water reactor (BWR) internals, control rod drive mechanisms, and reactor pressure vessel closure hardware. Approved under ASME Section III for Class 1 nuclear components. Radiation embrittlement resistance is superior to austenitic stainless steel at equivalent fluence levels.
The combination of high strength and excellent toughness at temperatures down to -196°C makes Inconel 718 screws the preferred choice for LNG heat exchanger closures, cryogenic valve bonnets, and liquid nitrogen storage vessel flanges where carbon steel and standard stainless fasteners suffer ductile-to-brittle transition.

Inconel 718 screws are available in socket head cap screws (DIN 912 / ISO 4762 / ASME B18.3), hex head screws (DIN 933 / ISO 4017 / ASME B18.2.1), button head socket screws (ISO 7380), flat head socket screws (DIN 7991 / ISO 10642), low-profile socket head screws (DIN 7984), and set screws (DIN 913-916). Custom drive forms including Torx, hex flange, and 12-point are available on request with 15 working day lead time.
Inconel 718 screws are supplied in the precipitation-hardened condition per AMS 2774 / AMS 5664. The standard two-stage ageing cycle is: solution anneal at 980°C for 1 hour, air cool, then age at 718°C for 8 hours, furnace cool to 621°C, hold for a total ageing time of 18 hours, then air cool. This produces minimum tensile strength of 1241 MPa and yield strength of 1034 MPa. Annealed-only condition (AMS 5662) is available on request for applications requiring subsequent customer heat treatment.
Yes – Inconel 718 is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 Table A.3 for use in H2S-containing oilfield environments, subject to a maximum hardness of 40 HRC. All screws are supplied with a hardness survey per NACE requirements. For downhole applications, confirm the specific H2S partial pressure, chloride concentration, and temperature against the NACE ISO 15156-3 environmental limits before specifying.
Inconel 718 delivers significantly higher strength – 1241 MPa tensile vs 758 MPa for annealed 625 – making it the preferred choice where joint load capacity or screw size reduction is critical. Inconel 625 offers superior corrosion resistance (PREN 51+ vs approximately 30 for 718) and is preferred for seawater immersion and aggressive chemical environments. For gas turbine, aerospace, and high-pressure mechanical joints, 718 is the standard. For offshore structural connections and chemical process flanges, 625 is typically specified.
