Product Overview

What are SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Bolts?

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti bolts are austenitic stainless steel fasteners manufactured from UNS S31600, S31603, and S31635 bar stock conforming to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) to the standard 18-8 chromium-nickel base significantly improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared to SS 304, while the low-carbon 316L variant and titanium-stabilised 316Ti grade address sensitisation concerns in welded assemblies.

With a PREN of 24-26, SS 316 bolts are the most widely specified austenitic fastener grade in chemical processing, marine, pharmaceutical, and food-grade applications worldwide. They are produced to ASTM A193 B8M (Class 1 and Class 2) for pressure vessel and piping flange service, and to ISO 3506 A4-70 / A4-80 for general structural and metric applications.

Material Chemistry

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Chemical Composition

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Bolts are manufactured from an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with chromium (16–26%), nickel (8–28%), and grade-specific molybdenum additions per ASTM and ASTM A193/A194. Chromium content governs the self-healing passive oxide film; molybdenum (2–6%) enhances chloride pitting resistance; and carbon content determines sensitization risk in welded assemblies.

Why SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Alloy Composition Matters for Bolts

Mo (2–3%) — Chloride Pitting Resistance
Molybdenum raises the PREN of SS 316 to 24–26, providing meaningful resistance to chloride-induced pitting in coastal, marine, and chemical environments where SS 304 bolts fail prematurely. This makes SS 316 the default choice for seawater-cooled heat exchanger flanges and coastal structural connections.
Low Carbon in 316L — Weld Sensitisation Prevention
The 316L variant limits carbon to 0.03% max, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. SS 316L bolts used in welded assemblies or heat-affected zones retain full intergranular corrosion resistance without requiring post-weld annealing.
Titanium in 316Ti — High-Temperature Stabilisation
SS 316Ti adds titanium at 5×C minimum to permanently stabilise carbon as TiC rather than chromium carbide. This makes 316Ti bolts the preferred choice for service above 400°C where repeated thermal cycling would otherwise sensitise standard 316 or even 316L grades over time.

?? Anti-galling: SS 316 bolts are prone to galling under high torque. Always use molybdenum disulphide or PTFE-based anti-seize. Lubricated values assume K=0.15. Never dry-torque stainless bolts into stainless nuts without lubrication.

Industry Applications

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Bolts Applications — Industries & End Uses

SS 316 / 316L / 316Ti Bolts from RealBolt are specified across food and dairy, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas where very good corrosion resistance and 620 MPa tensile strength are required for reliable fastener performance. Click each industry below for detailed application examples.
SS 316 and 316L hex bolts and stud bolt sets are the standard fastener specification for ASME B16.5 flanged connections in sulphuric acid dilution systems, acetic acid reactors, chlorinated solvent pipelines, and urea plant heat exchangers. The molybdenum content provides corrosion resistance that SS 304 cannot deliver in these environments.
SS 316 bolts are specified for offshore platform walkways, jetty structural connections, boat deck fittings, and marine heat exchanger covers where atmospheric chloride levels and splash-zone exposure demand a molybdenum-bearing grade. 316L is preferred for welded marine assemblies to prevent sensitisation in the heat-affected zone.
SS 316L bolts are the FDA-compliant fastener of choice for hygienic process equipment including bioreactor vessel closures, CIP/SIP pipeline flanges, and food-grade conveyor frames. The low carbon content and smooth surface finish (Ra = 0.8 µm available) meet GMP and 3-A Sanitary Standards requirements for cleanability and corrosion resistance.
SS 316 stud bolt sets are widely used in reverse osmosis pressure vessel end-cap closures, multi-effect distillation (MED) heat exchanger flanges, and chlorinated water distribution pipeline flanges. The molybdenum content resists chloride attack from residual disinfectant concentrations that rapidly corrode SS 304 fasteners.

All three grades share the same chromium-nickel-molybdenum base composition and offer equivalent corrosion resistance in most environments. The key differences are: SS 316 is the standard grade suitable for ambient and moderate-temperature service up to approximately 300°C. SS 316L limits carbon to 0.03% max, making it the correct choice for welded assemblies or heat-affected zone applications where intergranular corrosion (sensitisation) must be avoided – it is the most commonly specified grade for pharmaceutical, food, and chemical process flanges. SS 316Ti adds titanium stabilisation, making it the preferred grade for continuous service above 400°C up to 800°C where repeated thermal cycling would sensitise even 316L over time. For ambient and moderate-temperature service, 316L is the safest default. Specify 316Ti only when sustained elevated temperature is confirmed.
SS 316 bolts provide good resistance to seawater splash and atmospheric marine exposure, but are not recommended for continuous full seawater immersion, particularly in crevice-prone geometries such as under bolt heads and between mating flanges. In immersed seawater, the PREN of 24-26 is insufficient to prevent crevice corrosion at ambient temperature over extended service periods. For continuous seawater immersion, duplex SS 2205 (PREN 35+) or super duplex SS 2507 (PREN 42+) bolts are recommended. SS 316 bolts perform reliably in splash zones, tidal zones, and atmospheric marine environments with appropriate maintenance intervals.
Austenitic stainless steel fasteners are highly susceptible to galling (cold welding of threads) when torqued without lubrication, particularly in stainless-to-stainless assemblies. Always apply a PTFE-based or molybdenum disulphide anti-seize compound to bolt threads and nut bearing faces before assembly. Reduce target torque values by 15-20% compared to dry values. Tighten at a slow, steady rate – avoid impact wrenches on stainless threads. If a bolt begins to seize during tightening, back off immediately and re-lubricate. Using a stainless bolt with a slightly different alloy nut (e.g., 316 bolt with 304 nut) can also reduce galling risk in non-corrosive environments.
Yes – SS 316L is the standard fastener material for FDA-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, food processing machinery, and beverage plant pipework. The low carbon content meets GMP requirements, and the molybdenum content provides resistance to cleaning chemicals including dilute nitric acid, citric acid, and sodium hypochlorite CIP solutions. Surface finish options include electropolished (Ra = 0.4 µm) and passivated per ASTM A967 for hygienic applications. 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG guidelines both accept SS 316L as a compliant contact-surface material for food and pharmaceutical fasteners.
