What is ASTM A490?

ASTM A490 is the highest-strength structural bolt specification in standard construction use. Made from alloy steel, quenched and tempered to 1035–1207 MPa (150–175 ksi) tensile. Its high preload capacity reduces required bolt count for slip-critical connections. The ISO metric equivalent is ISO 898-1 Class 10.9. ASTM A490 structural bolts are used in long-span bridges, high-rise building cores, industrial crane runways, offshore jacket structures and heavy equipment tie-downs where reducing bolt count or increasing slip resistance is the design driver. Not galvanisable — susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement at this strength level.

Chemical Composition

ASTM A490 fasteners are manufactured from alloy steel incorporating carefully balanced additions of chromium, molybdenum, and nickel or manganese, depending on the specific chemistry selected by the producer. Chromium enhances hardenability and contributes to wear resistance, while molybdenum improves strength retention at elevated temperatures and reduces temper embrittlement. These alloying elements work together during the quenching and tempering process to develop a fine-grained martensitic microstructure, which is essential for achieving the high strength levels required by this specification.

The resulting mechanical performance makes A490 fasteners ideal for heavy structural steel connections, including bridges, high-rise buildings, and industrial framing where superior clamping force and fatigue resistance are critical. Their high tensile and yield strength allow for smaller fastener sizes without compromising joint integrity, reducing overall connection weight. Although not inherently corrosion resistant, these fasteners can be hot-dip galvanized or mechanically plated in accordance with specification allowances. Their elevated hardness and strength provide dependable long-term performance under high-load structural service conditions.

Specifications

ASTM A490 Fastener Specifications

ASTM A490 Fasteners specifications emphasize high-strength structural fastening components defined by precise mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and technical requirements under ASTM A490. They suit demanding load-bearing applications where strength, hardness, and fit are critical, with dimensions and performance aligned to applicable structural standards.

Applications

ASTM A490 Fastener Applications

ASTM A490 Fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries are specified wherever corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength, or chemical media compatibility is critical to fastener performance. Primary industries and end-uses for ASTM A490 fasteners include ultra-high-strength structural; equivalent to metric grade 10.9.
ASTM A490 bolts are used in highly loaded beam-to-column, splice and bracing connections where greater clamp force and tensile capacity are required than standard A325 structural bolts can provide.
A490 heavy hex bolts are specified for bridge girders, cross frames and other fatigue-sensitive transportation connections, especially where slip resistance and predictable pretension are critical.
The high preload capability of ASTM A490 fasteners makes them suitable for slip-critical joints, moment connections and seismic steel framing systems designed under controlled installation procedures.
ASTM A490 Type 3 fasteners are selected for weathering steel assemblies where improved atmospheric corrosion resistance and matching appearance are required without conventional paint systems.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A490 Fasteners

Browse the questions below to get quick, expert answers about ASTM A490 Fasteners — covering alloy specifications (Alloy Q&T), applicable standards (ASTM A490), temperature ratings, corrosion performance, and how to source certified ASTM A490 fasteners from RealBolt Engineering Industries.
A490 at 1035–1207 MPa tensile is above the threshold (approximately 1000 MPa / 34 HRC) for hydrogen embrittlement from the acid pickling bath used before galvanising. ASTM F2329 and AISC explicitly prohibit galvanising A490. For weather-exposed applications, use A490 Type 3 (weathering steel) or A325 with galvanising.
ASTM A563 Grade DH (heat-treated) heavy hex nuts — same as A325. The nut must have a proof load exceeding the bolt proof load to prevent thread stripping. Washers: ASTM F436 Type 1 (standard) or Type 3 (weathering).
Generally yes — A490 minimum tensile (150 ksi / 1035 MPa) corresponds to ISO 898-1 Class 10.9 (1040 MPa). Both have similar yield-to-tensile ratios. As with A325/8.8, thread forms and testing protocols differ — engineering review required before substitution.
Type 1: alloy steel — the most common, used with painted or protected structures. Type 3: atmospheric-corrosion-resistant (weathering) alloy steel matching A588/A709 Grade 50W structures. Type 3 must be used in exposed weathering steel construction to prevent galvanic corrosion at the bolt/structure interface.
